Duplicates much of the information covered in required training classes for a Texas Concealed Handgun License (CHL). If you've never been to a CHL class and/or are considering getting a CHL then this book will explain what you're getting yourself into.Although the teaser states "in plain English for everyone to understand", I did not find that to be the case. While there are segments of plain English, most of the book is in a style only a lawyer could love. Makes sense, since the authors are attorneys. Have you ever heard a computer programmer explain something computer-related in what they call "plain English"? Disclaimer: I have a degree in Computer Science and 30 years experience in the field.
There's not as many "real world scenarios" as the teasers imply. Usually those are little generic "tip" boxes here and there. But what really IS useful are the legal cases that are referenced. You can Google-search them and read about an actual event. The actual court documents will explain why John Doe used a gun and what the Texas courts did about it. Unfortunately this book doesn't do any more than state "see John Doe vs Texas". The book doesn't even link them to the web. I really wish the book would expand on specific cases.
This book is good for someone thinking about becoming a Texas gun owner. Current Texas gun owners will read 25-30 pages between finding something they didn't already know. Either way, you will be wading through 300+ pages of the lawyer version of "plain English".

This is an exceptional book. It is written in a interesting, plain, down-to-earth manner. I learned a lot from it. This book was well worth the money I spent buying it.
I have the 2013 edition and this edition is organized better. I liked the 2013 edition but this edition is even better.
A definitive guide to Texas Gun Law and its interpretation. This is an essential resource for anyone who is licensed to carry a firearm in Texas or one who interested in obtaining a license. It is clearly written and refutes common misinterpretations of the law.

Easily the most authoritative reference for any Texan with a CCL.
Actually, the author pleasantly surprised me. I thought I'd be reading a bunch of boring legalese and that I'd have the follow and understand byzantine legal rationales to understand the laws. Not so. The author's style is down to earth and straight-forward and his legal reasoning is very easy to follow.
I was also pleasantly surprised to see that it was completely updated to include the new open carry regulations.
I bought this as a gift for someone not too familiar with the Texas state gun laws, who was interested in learning for future carry purposes. I first looked through it a little myself, and it provides some great information. I'm thinking of buying a separate copy for myself, as I think this is a necessity for all gun owners, or those simply wanting to be more familiar with the law.
Does a poor job of explaining Texas use of force and firearms law in plain English. Seems very Lawyerly in that it doesn't come out and say specifically when use of force is legal.
I kept expecting it to finally make remarkable points instead of ambiguously dancing around what scenarios are legal or not. It did however contain many example scenarios that seemed far fetched and not realistic for the average person but more like the most unusual or ridiculously bizarre things an attorney would encounter. It slogs through the first several chapters trying to explain several of what it says are key terms/concepts to be learned in order to understand Texas gun and use of force law but it does this in a way that makes them about as clear as mud.
All in all a frustrating and over-priced read. I base my onion not only on my experience reading this book but also on having read another publication that covers Florida firearm and use of force that is a much better read that actually makes sense to a layperson and provides specific, realistic scenarios to explain what is and is not legal around firearm and use of force in Florida.
I think the authors of Texas Gun Law would do well to read and bench mark off of the writing and teaching style used by the author of the Florida Firearms - Law, Use & Ownership book ( http//www./Florida-Firearms-Ownership-Complete-Including/dp/0964195879 ).
