Janko Reinhardt has had a hard life. He was left at a church by his mother when he was six years old. Since then he's been jostled between one bad foster home and another.
But that was a long time ago now. He's a young man, but things haven't worked out well. He's dying from AIDS complications and these are the last few months of his life.
He wants to make amends, for the trespasses others have put upon him but perhaps more importantly for the trespasses that he has put upon himself.
But has he left it too late? Is there enough time in these short few months for Janko to unburden himself of his demons and make amends with himself and his past and find an everlasting peace that will carry him to the other side?
With the help of his three friends, who aren't exactly as they appear and the nurses who take care of him at home, his personal hospice, he might just manage it. And then there is the psychiatrist, a world renowned psychiatrist who will help him move past his troubled history to a peaceful future.
But the psychiatrist holds a dark secret, unknown, that will complicate matters further.

I rarely give any book a 5 star rating, that implies perfection. I don't think this book is perfect, it's too disturbing, but it is a book you will think about... for a very long time. This book is edgy, gritty, and punches hard. The short choppy read was distracting at first, but as I read on, I was easily able to see the character of Janko. I didn't like Janko at first. I had no compassion for him, mainly because he spent all his time swearing and crying about his situation. As he began to change he became much more likable and I finally was able to feel compassion for him.It wasn't until halfway through that I really caught on to what Janko was all about. I'd had the beginning of the idea before, but then it just all clicked and I started thinking back and looking for the clues. And there are definitely clues.
This is a story that I have thought about a lot after the reading of it. Not many books stay on my mind and cause me to think and re-think what the character was going through. Nicely done, Mr. Blacker.

Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of LIVID BLUE. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Janko Reinhardt is dying of complications from AIDS. He only has a few months left to live and he's decided to explore his past, banish his demons, and find some peace.
There are three friends who are trying to help him ... the nurses feel compassion for him, and a psychiatrist who wants to move him past his troubled life.
I found it really hard to feel any sympathy for Janko. It seems like the first half of the book was his whining and throwing F-bombs with every other breath. He was just not a likeable character. He did show some redeeming qualities as the book progressed.
Moving slowly, it is still an interesting premise. There were some twists that took my by surprise and the ending was gripping.
